    Actors in VR storytelling

    Virtual Reality (VR) storytelling enhances the immersion of users into virtual environments (VE). Its use in virtual cultural heritage presentations helps the revival of the genius loci (the spirit of the place) of cultural monuments. This paper aims to show that the use of actors in VR storytelling adds to the quality of user experience and improves the edutainment value of virtual cultural heritage applications. We will describe the Baiae dry visit application which takes us to a time travel in the city considered by the Roman elite as "Little Rome (Pusilla Roma)" and presently is only partially preserved under the sea.Comment: Pre-print versio

    Definition of analytical cleaning procedures for archaeological pottery from underwater environments: The case study of samples from Baia (Naples, South Italy)

    Abstract This work is focused on a multidisciplinary study of 13 pottery fragments collected in the submerged archaeological site of Baia (Naples, Italy). Founded by the Romans in the 1st century B.C., this archaeological area represents one of the greatest evidences of Roman architecture and it includes ancient ruins whose structures range from maritime villas and imperial buildings. Several diagnostic tests were carried out in order to characterize the archaeological materials, their structure and properties, as well as the alteration and degradation products. Degradation forms in seawater imply not only a variation in the physico-mechanical and chemical properties of the material but also an aesthetic damage, due to superficial deposits, which can lead to the illegibility of the artefacts. In this context, it is crucial to determine to what extent these decay factors, mainly attributable to biological growth, could affect the durability of pottery and what are the effects of cleaning procedures. The work offers further elements to obtain new insights into the underwater cultural heritage field and in the function of ceramic matter, especially related to several applications in technology and in the adoption of strategies for suitable conservation procedures

    A Sustainable Approach for the Management and Valorization of Underwater Cultural Heritage: New Perspectives from the TECTONIC Project

    Documentation and conservation of underwater cultural heritage (UCH) are crucial to preserving humankind’s history and traditions, safeguarding tangible testimonies of past human life while ensuring its accessibility to future generations. The TECTONIC (Technological Consortium TO develop sustainability of underwater Cultural Heritage) project is promoting an intersectoral collaboration between academic and non-academic professionals (i.e., archaeologists, conservators, geologists, engineers, etc.) working on different topics related to UCHs, to find solutions to the issues still existing in the field. The overall aim is the exchange of skills for the improvement and assessment of innovative materials and techniques to develop solutions and marketable products for the conservation and management of the UCH, sustainably. To achieve its overall aim, TECTONIC is undertaking activities driven by the following objectives: (a) the study, documentation, and mapping of selected UCHs; (b) the creation of decision-support tools for UCH risk assessment in a changing environment; (c) the initiation of conservation studies and protocols for conservation activities; (d) the development of open and low-cost robotic solutions for the inspection of UCH; and (e) the raising of public awareness and knowledge about UCH. All the objectives are devoted to stimulating new sustainable ideas that would bring the growth of cultural tourism and the development of new marketable products by capitalizing on the research results.Fil: Ricca, Michela.     Reconstructing a Submerged Villa Maritima: The Case of the Villa dei Pisoni in Baiae

    Among the activities planned for the MUSAS Project, the digital reconstruction of the underwater sites constitutes a particular challenge, requiring strong cooperation between archaeologists and technicians. The case of the Villa dei Pisoni in Baiae, one of the richest in the Phlaegrean territory, is particularly interesting: the architectural remains, already documented in the 1980s and now inserted in one of the diving spots of the Underwater Park of Baiae, are disseminated on a huge surface, including quays, thermal complexes, a fishpond, and a large, luxurious viridarium. The effort required for the digital reconstruction of the ancient villa improved the previous knowledge and the lack of documentation even in a well-known site. In this paper, we will retrace the long path from the 3D reconstruction of the archaeological remains to the virtual architectural model of the villa, the numerous challenges, doubts, and uncertainties in the creation of the original spaces, and the support offered by the ancient sources, both literary and iconographic, in solving archaeological problems

    L’operazione di “archeologia urbana” avviata a Napoli nell’ambito dei lavori per la realizzazione delle linee 1 e 6 della Metropolitana si è rivelata un’occasione irripetibile di conoscenza del paesaggio costiero antistante il nucleo più antico della città. Nel 2004, nel pozzo di stazione a piazza Municipio, sono stati indagati un settore del bacino portuale e i resti di tre imbarcazioni d’epoca imperiale (Napoli A-C). Tra il 2013 e il 2015, l’esplorazione per il pozzo di stazione della linea 6 ha permesso di chiarire la situazione del litorale prospiciente il bacino portuale, mentre l’indagine nella zona di raccordo tra i pozzi di stazione e l’attuale Stazione Marittima (area 4) ha portato al rinvenimento di quattro nuovi relitti databili tra l’epoca repubblicana e l’impero (Napoli E-H). L’articolo presenterà, in via del tutto preliminare, le operazioni di scavo archeologico, documentazione e recupero di questi nuovi relitti. The operation of “urban archaeology” started in Naples during the construction of metro lines 1 and 6 has been a unique opportunity to investigate the coastal landscape facing the ancient town. In 2004, the harbor basin and the remains of three boats (Naples A-C) dating to the imperial era have been investigated in the Municipio station shaft. Between 2013 and 2015, the investigations for the line 6 station shaft has clarified the situation of the shoreline overlooking the harbor basin, while the investigation into the junction zone between the station shafts and the Stazione Marittima (area 4) led to the discovery of four new wrecks dating between the Republican era and the Empire (Naples E-H). The article will present the preliminary results of archaeological excavation, documentation and recovery of these new wrecks
